The problem with codec packs is they have a shit-ton of settings and if improperly configured could cause more problems then they fix. You need to understand all the codec mumbo jumbo to install it otherwise it could leave you with conflicting codecs, not a good thing. I use k-lite codec pack, it works pretty handy to allow wmp to play nearly any type of video files. I use it and for example, I can play flv files in wmp as well as many other types, without needing multiple players. I love it, but not everyone wants to install codec packs to there computer, do to what I said above.....high possibility of errors.

I won't provide any links because as Gassy said codec packs are not reccomended, they work but you gotta be careful.

It's just waisting your resources for nothing!

Real nightmare is when you try and convert videos. A lot of video converters crashes at startup.
