Get AVG for free and just don't do anything dumb like click on suspicious links, and scan .zip files before you open them.

I avoid nearly everything by just avoiding bad links and scanning stuff. The few times a virus gets through, AVG take cares of it. The few times both those things fail, I do all my homework on the virus I have and find a specialized tool to delete it.

Most every popular virus has a special little application somewhere on the net that someone made just to get rid of it. You just have to look.
