^^ Remember to use a good knife when you do that.

Split them up

wouldn't it just be the same size altogether but split up?

use h.264 (videocodec) + AAC (audiocodec) in a .MP4 container it's the best quality for the best compression at the moment.
You can use programs like avidemux for a simple GUI to convert this way.

Don't REcompress them yet again. Most video files are already in compressed format unless they are in RAW, so any time you convert file types you're stripping away data that degrades both video and audio. The best method is to simply split the files up by using "split and concat" - Mac, or "hjsplit" - windows.
